Overview.

City Walk is an urban roaming experience design that helps people explore cities in a more relaxed, meaningful, and socially connected way.

The project focuses on improving the city-walking experience by combining navigation, storytelling, and social interaction, encouraging users to slow down and rediscover everyday urban spaces.

The Challenge

Despite the growing popularity of Citywalks, users often give up due to unclear routes, getting lost easily, and a lack of companions. The challenge lies in designing urban walks as an experience that is easier to start, more engaging, and better paced, thereby increasing users' willingness to participate consistently.

A Guided, Interactive Way to Wander

The Outcome

A lightweight city-walking experience that lowers the barrier to starting, guides users with clear routes and pacing, and introduces companionship through shared paths and social matching—turning citywalk into a more engaging, sustainable urban activity rather than a one-off decision.

An Interactive Urban Walking System

Walking with rhythm and companionship

Walking, Made Clear

By visualizing time, distance, and social interactions, the system adds rhythm and companionship to solo city walks.

A real-time walking interface that provides clear direction, pace, and distance—helping users stay oriented while enjoying the rhythm of the city.

Warm, friendly visuals and subtle vibrations turn pairing into a playful moment—like a gentle signal that helps walkers discover companions along the way.

Playful Interaction for Finding Companions

Background & Motivation

Recently, another hot word burst into our eyes -- "City walk",Different from the iconic scenic spots in the tour group, the route planning of City walk is very detailed and the scenic spots are very small. People are more interested in the natural city style. City walk has been widely spread on social platforms, thus attracting more people's attention and yearning.

According to the 2023 Tourism Research Report, more than 80% of people prefer to roam in cities

According to the survey, 45% of people in city walk walk alone, unable to find a partner

The number of people who citywalk each week is gradually increasing, and nearly 70% of people citywalk regularly

Reflection

This project helped me explore how interaction design can subtly shape social behavior without interrupting daily routines. It also reinforced the importance of testing behavior-driven systems in real contexts, where environment and user habits significantly influence engagement.
